Choosing your JC subject combination can feel overwhelming. Should you take 4H2? Is hybrid better? What subjects do you need for university courses like Medicine, Law, or Business Analytics? And what if you choose the “wrong” combination? The good news is that choosing your A-Level subjects does not have to be complicated. At Zenith Education Studio, we recommend using a simple 3-step framework:

  1. Know the rules
  2. Check university prerequisites
  3. Lean into your strengths

If you are an incoming J1 student, this guide will help you make a more confident decision about your subject combination.

Step 1: Understand the JC Subject Rules

Before choosing your subject combination, it is important to understand how the JC system works.

Most students in Junior College take:

  • 3 H2 subjects and 1 H1 subject
  • OR 4 H2 subjects

In addition, all students take:

  • General Paper (GP)
  • Project Work (PW)
  • Mother Tongue (if applicable)

What Is the Difference Between H1 and H2?

H2 subjects cover more content and carry a heavier workload compared to H1 subjects.

For example:

  • H2 Mathematics is more in-depth than H1 Mathematics
  • H2 sciences include practical components and more advanced concepts

Most university courses look at your H2 subjects more closely, especially for competitive courses.

Should You Take 4H2?

Many students think taking 4H2 automatically makes them “better” students. That is not always true.

Taking 4H2 can be useful if:

  • you are academically strong across multiple subjects
  • you want to keep more university options open
  • you are comfortable handling a heavier workload

However, JC moves very quickly. Taking 4H2 just for prestige can backfire if you become overwhelmed.

For most students, a balanced 3H2 + 1H1 combination is perfectly fine.

Step 2: Check University Subject Requirements

This is one of the biggest mistakes students make. Some university courses require specific subjects, especially at the H2 level. Before finalising your subject combination, always check the prerequisites for the courses you may be interested in.

Here are some common examples:

University Course Recommended / Required Subjects
Medicine H2 Chemistry + H2 Biology or Physics
Engineering H2 Mathematics + H2 Physics
Computer Science H2 Mathematics
Business Analytics H2 Mathematics
Data Science H2 Mathematics
Pharmacy H2 Chemistry
Economics H2 Mathematics strongly recommended
Law No fixed subject requirement, but essay-heavy subjects can help

For example, if you are considering Business Analytics or Computer Science, taking H2 Mathematics is extremely important. Even if you are unsure about your future course, it is smart to avoid accidentally closing doors too early.

Step 3: Choose Subjects That Match Your Strengths

Once you know the compulsory subjects for your possible university courses, the next step is simple: Choose subjects you are naturally stronger in. JC is demanding. Picking subjects you genuinely enjoy — and are reasonably good at — makes a huge difference. Ask yourself:

  • Which subjects did I consistently perform well in at O-Levels?
  • Do I enjoy memorisation-heavy subjects or problem-solving subjects more?
  • Do I prefer writing essays or doing calculations?
  • Which lessons do I naturally pay attention to?

Your subject combination should fit your strengths, not your friends’. Just because everyone around you is taking a certain combination does not mean it is right for you.

Science vs Arts vs Hybrid Stream

Science Stream

The Science stream is usually taken by students interested in:

  • Medicine
  • Engineering
  • Computing
  • Science-related university courses

Common H2 subjects include:

  • Mathematics
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Biology

The Science stream generally keeps more university pathways open, especially for STEM-related degrees.

Arts Stream

The Arts stream is suitable for students who enjoy:

  • writing
  • analysis
  • argumentation
  • humanities subjects

Common Arts subjects include:

  • Economics
  • Literature
  • History
  • Geography

Students interested in Law, Social Sciences, Journalism, or Humanities-related courses may prefer this route.

Hybrid Stream

Hybrid combinations mix science and humanities subjects.

For example:

  • H2 Math
  • H2 Economics
  • H2 Chemistry
  • H1 Literature

Hybrid combinations are useful for students with mixed interests or students who want flexibility between science and humanities pathways.

Popular JC Subject Combinations

PCME (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Economics)

One of the most common JC combinations for students interested in Engineering, Computing, and other STEM-related courses. Students taking PCME often seek additional support for demanding H2 subjects such as:

BCME (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Economics)

Popular among students considering:

  • Medicine
  • Dentistry
  • Healthcare
  • Life sciences

HELM (History, Economics, Literature, Mathematics)

A strong humanities combination for students interested in:

  • Law
  • Political Science
  • Social Sciences

GELM (Geography, Economics, Literature, Mathematics)

Suitable for students interested in:

  • Environmental studies
  • International relations
  • Humanities-based courses

Mistakes to Avoid When Choosing A Level Subject Combination

  • Choosing Based on Friends: Your friends may have different strengths, interests, and goals. Focus on what works for you.
  • Taking 4H2 for Prestige: 4H2 is not automatically better. A strong A-Level score matters more than simply taking more difficult subjects.
  • Ignoring University Requirements: Not taking the required H2 subjects can limit your university options later.
  • Underestimating the JC Workload: JC is a major jump from secondary school. Choose a combination you can realistically manage for two years.
  • Choosing Subjects You Already Dislike: If you strongly disliked a subject at O-Levels, taking it at H2 level may not suddenly become enjoyable.

How Can Zenith Help?

Choosing your JC subject combination is a major decision — and many students only realise whether a subject suits them after lessons begin. At Zenith Education Studio, students can explore different JC subjects before fully committing to a subject combination.

Free Trial Classes Throughout the Year

Zenith offers free trial classes year-round, allowing students to:

  • experience different JC tuition subjects firsthand
  • understand the pace and difficulty of JC lessons
  • identify subjects they naturally enjoy or excel in
  • speak with experienced tutors before making decisions

Whether you are considering PCME, BCME, HELM, or a hybrid combination, trial classes can help you make a more informed and confident choice.

Seasonal Crash Courses During School Holidays

During every major school holiday, Zenith also runs intensive crash courses for JC students.

These programmes help students:

  • strengthen weak subjects early

  • adapt to the steep jump from secondary school to JC
  • build confidence in difficult H2 subjects

For students still unsure about their strengths, crash courses also provide valuable exposure to different subject styles and workloads.
