What Is The Rank Point System And How Does It Work?

The Rank Point system is the grading system used by pre-university or Junior College students in Singapore to serve as a benchmark for a student's academic success and determine their eligibility for various university courses.

Your Rank Point is determined based on your performance in your H1/H2 exams, and the highest Rank Point you can achieve is 90. Your final grades obtained in your exams can be converted into Rank Points by using the table below.

It should be noted that although H3 subjects do not affect your Rank Points, they can be used for special consideration into programmes which may require additional differentiation in your achievement, such as in scholarships, application into medical school, law school, etc.

How To Calculate Your Rank Points?

Calculating your rank point is a more complicated process than you might expect and is largely based on the H2 subjects that you have chosen. Those taking 3 H2 Subjects will have a slightly different calculation than those taking 4 H2 subjects.

Certain H1 subjects, such as General Paper (GP), are mandatory and must be used in your Rank Point calculation.

Calculate your score easily with our Rank Point Calculator.

For a better idea of how your Rank Points are calculated, look at the examples below for the 3 possible scenarios:

  1. Students with 4 H2s
  2. Students with 3 H2s + 1 H1
  3. Students with 3 H2s without MTL

For Students with 4 H2s

In this scenario, your Rank Point will be calculated based on:

  • Your four best H2 subjects
  • H1 General Paper (GP)
  • H1 Project Work (PW)

Your weakest H2 score would be counted as an H1, meaning it would be worth at most 10 Rank Points instead of the usual 20 Rank Points.

Calculate your final score by simply counting your total score.

For example:

Student B got an A in all his subjects except 2 H2 subjects, where he received a B and a C. This would give him a grade of AABC/AA. The grades before the backslash refer to his H2 subjects, and the grades after refer to his H1 subjects.

In this scenario, the weakest H2 score would be converted into an H1. This means his H2 subject with the C grade would not be worth 15 Rank Points, but instead 7.5.

So when you calculate his score:

20 + 20 + 17.5 + 7.5 + 10 + 10 = 85

This means Student B (with a grade of AABC/AA) has a Rank Point of 85

For Students with 3 H2s + 1 H1

In this scenario, your Rank Point will be calculated based on:

  • Your three best H2 subjects
  • Your best H1 subject
  • H1 General Paper (GP)
  • H1 Project Work (PW)
  • H1 Mother Tongue Language (MTL)

Calculate your final score by multiplying your total score by 0.9.

For example:

Student A got an A in all his subjects except 2 H2 subjects, in which he got a B for both, giving him a grade of ABB/AAAA. The grades before the backslash refer to his H2 subjects, and the grades after refer to his H1 subjects.

So when you calculate his score:

(20 + 17.5 + 17.5 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 ) x 0.9 = 85.5

This means Student A (with a grade of ABB/AAAA) has a Rank Point of 85.5

For Students with 3 H2s + 1 H1 without MTL

In this scenario, your Rank Point will be calculated based on:

  • Your three best H2 subjects
  • Your best H1 subject
  • H1 General Paper (GP)
  • H1 Project Work (PW)

Calculate your final score by simply counting your total score.

Note: Your MTL score will still be calculated, but it will only be used if it improves your overall score

For example:

Student C got an A in all his subjects except for General Paper, in which he got a B. This would give him a grade of AAA/AAB. The grades before the backslash refer to his H2 subjects, and the grades after refer to his H1 subjects.

So when you calculate his score:

20 + 20 + 20 + 10 + 10 + 7.5 = 87.5

This means Student C (with a grade of AAA/AAB) has a Rank Point of 87.5

What Does My Rank Point Say About My University Options?

Here’s a general guide to help you understand what your score might mean for university admissions.

Do note that this is not tied to any official metrics or guaranteed admission criteria. While it can serve as a rough reference, always verify details through official university channels.

Rank Point

General Guide

88–90

Eligible for a wide range of university programmes, both locally and internationally. Competitive options are within reach*.

85–87

Strong position for admission to many university programmes. Additional factors may be considered for more selective courses.

80–84

Opens up diverse options. Selective programmes may still be possible with a well-rounded application.

75–79

Access to a broad array of university pathways remains available. Supplementary achievements can be beneficial.

70–74

Competitive programmes may be more selective, but there are still multiple routes to explore.

65–69

Some programmes may be more competitive, but viable options remain, especially with relevant experience or complementary strengths.

60–64

Entry into certain universities may be more challenging; however, alternative pathways or supporting portfolios can enhance applications.

Below 60

Direct admission to local universities may be limited, but private institutions, overseas options, and work-learn programmes offer meaningful alternatives.

* Programmes like Law, Architecture, and Medicine often include assessment stages—ensure you’re aware of and prepared for them.

Potential Changes to the A-Level Grading System in 2026

The A-level grading system will undergo changes that will be implemented in 20261. Here are some of the A-Level grading system changes below:

  • Removal of Fourth Content-Based A-Level Subject: The fourth content-based A-level subject will be removed from rank point consideration unless it improves the final score.

  • Turning Project Work into a Pass/Fail Subject: The Project Work subject will be turned into a Pass/Fail subject and consequently be removed from the Rank Point system.
  • Reduced Maximum Rank Point: The maximum Rank Point score will be adjusted from 90 to 70.

Tips To Improve Your Rank Points

Below are some tips to help you improve your Rank Points:

Prioritise your stronger subjects

One way to improve your Rank Point is to focus on your stronger subjects and hone in on them. By thoroughly focusing on them, it would not only improve your Rank Point score but also help you gain confidence to tackle your other subjects too.

Take your H1s seriously

People can often underestimate the impact H1 can have on your final Rank Point score. Although they are technically worth less than H2s, they can often be the determining factor between you and your desired score.

Consider taking 4 H2s

Taking 4 H2s can be challenging, but it can also open more avenues and opportunities for university applications and academic programmes. Certain universities also consider students with 4 H2s to be stronger applicants, giving them an edge in the selection process.
