Sec 3 Subject Combination Guide Singapore (2026): How to Choose the Right Subjects

Choosing your Sec 3 subject combination is one of the biggest academic decisions you'll make in secondary school. The subjects you take in Upper Secondary determine the GCE O-Level papers you'll sit for, influence your post-secondary pathways, and may affect the courses available to you in junior college (JC), polytechnic and beyond.

</p></div><p>At the end of Secondary 2, every student in Singapore picks the subject combination that will carry them through Sec 3 and Sec 4. It is one of the quietest — yet most consequential — decisions of the secondary years. Your combination sets which national exam papers you sit, which junior college (JC) combinations you can later take, and which university courses stay within reach.</p><p>‍</p><p>The system has also changed. Under <strong>Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB)</strong>, students now take subjects at different levels (G1, G2, G3) rather than in fixed streams. </p><p>‍</p><p>The <strong>Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC)</strong> replaces the O- and N-Level exams from 2027, and JC admission moves to the <strong>L1R4</strong> system from 2028. This guide explains how to choose well under the new rules, using a simple three-step framework: <strong>know the rules, match your goal, and play to your strengths.</strong></p><p>‍</p><p><strong>Quick context for 2026:</strong></p><ul role="list"><li><strong>Full SBB is already live</strong> — there is no more Express / Normal streaming; subjects are taken at G1, G2 or G3 level.</li><li><strong>SEC replaces O- and N-Levels from 2027</strong> — same standard, jointly awarded by SEAB, MOE and Cambridge.</li><li><strong>JC admission uses L1R4 from 2028</strong> — 5 subjects instead of 6, with a qualifying score of 16 points or better.</li></ul><h2>When and How Sec 3 Subject Combinations Are Decided</h2><p>The selection process usually runs on this timeline:</p><ul role="list"><li><strong>Term 3, Sec 2:</strong> schools brief students and parents on the combinations available.</li><li><strong>End-of-year exams:</strong> results determine eligibility for specific subjects and G-levels.</li><li><strong>November:</strong> students submit their order of preference.</li><li><strong>December–January:</strong> schools finalise allocations and announce Sec 3 classes.</li></ul><p>Allocation comes down to three factors: <strong>merit</strong> (your academic performance), <strong>choice</strong> (your order of preference) and <strong>availability</strong> (which subjects the school offers, and how demand compares to vacancies).</p><p>Crucially, <strong>offerings vary by school</strong>. One school may offer Economics and three pure sciences; another may not. Check your own school's combinations early — we have compiled the official links for popular schools in the <em>table near the end of this guide</em>.</p><h2>Compulsory vs Elective Subjects at Sec 3</h2><p>Secondary subjects fall into two buckets: compulsory subjects that everyone takes, and elective subjects that you choose around your strengths and goals.</p><p>‍</p><div class="w-embed"><div class="table-wrap"> <table class="rteTable"> <thead><tr><th>Group</th><th>Subjects</th></tr></thead> <tbody> <tr><td>Compulsory (all students)</td><td>English Language, Mother Tongue, Mathematics, and at least one Humanities (Combined Humanities, which pairs Social Studies with an elective).</td></tr> <tr><td>Mathematics</td><td>Elementary Mathematics (E-Maths) is taken by all; Additional Mathematics (A-Maths) is an elective on top of it.</td></tr> <tr><td>Pure Sciences</td><td>Physics, Chemistry, Biology — each a standalone subject.</td></tr> <tr><td>Combined Sciences</td><td>Two sciences combined into one subject (e.g. Physics/Chemistry or Chemistry/Biology).</td></tr> <tr><td>Pure Humanities</td><td>Geography, History, Literature in English.</td></tr> <tr><td>Combined Humanities</td><td>Social Studies paired with Geography, History or Literature.</td></tr> <tr><td>Other electives</td><td>Principles of Accounts, Computing, Art, Design & Technology, Nutrition & Food Science (availability varies by school).</td></tr> </tbody> </table> </div></div><h2>The Three Decisions That Shape Your Combination</h2><p>Most of the real choices come down to three interlocking decisions.</p><h3>1. Additional Mathematics — take it or not?</h3><p>A-Maths is not simply a harder version of E-Maths — it is a separate subject covering calculus, trigonometry and deeper algebra, and it is the foundation for <strong>H2 Mathematics at JC</strong>. If you are aiming for a JC science or engineering route, take A-Maths. If you are leaning toward polytechnic or an arts-stream JC, you may not need it. Get support where needed for <a href="https://www.zenitheducationstudio.com/secondary-tuition/math/upper-sec-a-math">A-Maths</a> and <a href="https://www.zenitheducationstudio.com/secondary-tuition/math/upper-sec-e-math">E-Maths</a>.</p><h3>2. Pure Science vs Combined Science</h3><p>Pure Sciences (<a href="https://www.zenitheducationstudio.com/secondary-tuition/science/upper-secondary-physics">Physics</a>, <a href="https://www.zenitheducationstudio.com/secondary-tuition/science/upper-secondary-chemistry">Chemistry</a>, <a href="https://www.zenitheducationstudio.com/secondary-tuition/science/upper-secondary-biology">Biology</a>) are each separate subjects studied in greater depth. <a href="https://www.zenitheducationstudio.com/secondary-tuition/science/combined-science">Combined Science</a> covers two disciplines for a single grade at reduced depth. Combined Science does <strong>not</strong> block JC admission, but students targeting H2 sciences will find the jump much smoother with a Pure Science foundation. Take Pure if you enjoy science and are JC-bound; Combined is a sensible choice for broader exposure or a polytechnic route.</p><h3>3. Which Humanities subject?</h3><p>Under L1R4, one of your counted subjects (the <strong>R1 slot</strong>) must come from the Humanities — so a strong full Humanities subject matters more than ever. Choose <a href="https://www.zenitheducationstudio.com/secondary-tuition/humanities/upper-secondary-history">History</a>, <a href="https://www.zenitheducationstudio.com/secondary-tuition/humanities/upper-secondary-literature">Literature</a> or Geography based on your reading and writing strengths, supported by <a href="https://www.zenitheducationstudio.com/secondary-tuition/humanities/upper-secondary-social-studies">Social Studies</a> in the Combined Humanities pairing.</p><h2>How Many Subjects Should You Take?</h2><p>Historically, stronger students were nudged toward 8 subjects to keep options open. The move to L1R4 changes that maths: <strong>only 5 subjects count</strong> toward the JC aggregate, and each now carries 20% weight (up from about 16.7% under the old L1R5). A student with 7 strong subjects is often better placed than one with 8 stretched-thin grades.</p><p>‍</p><div class="w-embed"><div class="table-wrap"> <table class="rteTable"> <thead><tr><th>Aspect</th><th>7 subjects</th><th>8 subjects</th></tr></thead> <tbody> <tr><td>Workload</td><td>More time per subject, deeper mastery.</td><td>Heavier load; less time per subject.</td></tr> <tr><td>L1R4 impact</td><td>Still sufficient — only 5 are counted.</td><td>One extra "safety net," but each grade carries more weight.</td></tr> <tr><td>Risk</td><td>Less buffer if one subject slips.</td><td>Spreading thin can drag down several grades.</td></tr> <tr><td>Best for</td><td>Students with a clear direction.</td><td>Consistently strong all-rounders still exploring.</td></tr> </tbody> </table> </div></div><h2>Full Subject-Based Banding and G-Levels</h2><p>Under <a href="/resources-o-level/subject-based-banding-in-singapore-complete-guide-2026">Full Subject-Based Banding</a>, each subject is taken at one of three levels, which broadly map to the old streams:</p><ul role="list"><li><strong>G3</strong> — most demanding, equivalent to the former Express level.</li><li><strong>G2</strong> — equivalent to the former Normal (Academic) level.</li><li><strong>G1</strong> — equivalent to the former Normal (Technical) level.</li></ul><p>This matters for JC: <strong>only G3 subjects count</strong> toward the L1R4 aggregate. Students with a mix of G-levels should focus on their strongest G3 grades, and can ask the school about upgrading a G2 subject to G3 where their results support it.</p><h2>What's Changing: SEC (2027) and L1R4 (2028)</h2><p>From 2027, the O- and N-Level examinations are combined and renamed the <strong>Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC)</strong>. Standards are unchanged, and the certificate remains jointly awarded and internationally recognised. From the 2028 admissions exercise, JC and Millennia Institute (MI) entry uses the <strong>L1R4</strong> aggregate — five subjects instead of six.</p><p>‍</p><div class="w-embed"><div class="table-wrap"> <table class="rteTable"> <thead><tr><th>L1R4</th><th>Subject</th></tr></thead> <tbody> <tr><td>L1</td><td>G3 English Language or Higher Mother Tongue.</td></tr> <tr><td>R1</td><td>Best-scoring G3 Humanities subject.</td></tr> <tr><td>R2</td><td>Best-scoring G3 subject from Mathematics or Science.</td></tr> <tr><td>R3</td><td>Best-scoring G3 subject from Humanities, Mathematics or Science.</td></tr> <tr><td>R4</td><td>Any best-scoring G3 subject.</td></tr> </tbody> </table> </div></div><p>‍</p><p><strong>Key thresholds:</strong> JC requires an L1R4 of 16 points or better; MI requires 20 or better. Minimum grades still apply — English A1–C6, any one Mathematics A1–D7, and a Mother Tongue requirement. Bonus points are capped at 3 (with up to 2 more for a JC Language Elective Programme), and every counted subject must be taken at G3.</p><p>Choosing your Sec 3 combination is really the first move in this longer game. When you reach J1, our <a href="https://www.zenitheducationstudio.com/a-level/jc-subject-combination-guide">JC Subject Combination Guide</a> walks through the A-Level side of the decision.</p><h2>Match Your Combination to Your Goal</h2><p>Your subject combination should serve your post-secondary goal — not the other way around.</p><p>‍</p><div class="w-embed"><div class="table-wrap"> <table class="rteTable"> <thead><tr><th>Goal</th><th>Recommended Sec 3 direction</th></tr></thead> <tbody> <tr><td>JC Science (PCME / BCME)</td><td>A-Maths + Pure Chemistry + Pure Physics or Pure Biology. The standard route for engineering, medicine and science degrees.</td></tr> <tr><td>JC Arts (HELM-style)</td><td>A strong Humanities subject (History, Literature or Geography). A-Maths is optional but useful for Economics; E-Maths alone is enough for most arts combinations.</td></tr> <tr><td>Polytechnic</td><td>Combined Science is usually sufficient — prioritise strong English and Maths grades. Some courses require Pure Sciences, so check prerequisites.</td></tr> <tr><td>ITE</td><td>Focus on core subjects; applied subjects such as Design & Technology or Nutrition & Food Science are directly relevant.</td></tr> </tbody> </table> </div></div><p>‍</p><p><strong>Rule of thumb:</strong> if you are unsure between JC and polytechnic, keep JC options open. It is far easier to move from a JC-ready combination to polytechnic than the reverse.</p><h2>Popular Sec 3 Subject Combinations</h2><p>These illustrative combinations show how the pieces fit together. Actual availability depends on your school.</p><p>‍</p><div class="w-embed"><div class="table-wrap"> <table class="rteTable"> <thead><tr><th>Combination</th><th>Typically suits</th></tr></thead> <tbody> <tr><td>Triple Science + A-Maths (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)</td><td>Students aiming for competitive JC science routes, medicine or research.</td></tr> <tr><td>Double Science + A-Maths + Combined Humanities</td><td>The most common science-track combination — keeps STEM pathways open with a manageable load.</td></tr> <tr><td>Single Science + Humanities + A-Maths/E-Maths</td><td>Balanced profiles weighing both science and humanities options.</td></tr> <tr><td>Full Humanities + E-Maths (e.g. Pure Geography/History/Literature)</td><td>Arts-inclined students targeting Law, Social Sciences or Humanities degrees.</td></tr> </tbody> </table> </div></div><h2>Common Mistakes to Avoid</h2><ul role="list"><li><strong>Following your friends.</strong> Two students with the same PSLE score can have very different aptitudes. Choose for your own strengths.</li><li><strong>Taking Pure Science "just in case."</strong> A C6 in Pure Chemistry can hurt your aggregate more than an A2 in Combined Science helps it.</li><li><strong>Dropping A-Maths to lighten the load.</strong> If you are capable and JC-science-bound, this creates a much bigger problem when H2 Mathematics assumes A-Maths foundations.</li><li><strong>Neglecting the R1 Humanities.</strong> Under L1R4 a Humanities subject is compulsory in your aggregate — a weak one drags down an otherwise strong score.</li><li><strong>Assuming every subject is offered.</strong> Check your school's actual combinations before ranking your choices.</li></ul><h2>A Simple Five-Step Decision Framework</h2><ol role="list"><li><strong>Identify the goal.</strong> JC (Science or Arts), Polytechnic or ITE. If unsure, default to keeping JC options open.</li><li><strong>Check the prerequisites.</strong> Does your target need A-Maths or Pure Sciences? Work backwards from there.</li><li><strong>Assess your strengths honestly.</strong> Use Sec 2 grades, teacher feedback and genuine interest — a subject you enjoy is easier to sustain over two years.</li><li><strong>Decide 7 or 8 subjects.</strong> Go deeper with 7 if you have a clear direction; take 8 only if your grades are consistently strong.</li><li><strong>Confirm with your school.</strong> Verify the combination is offered and check any prerequisite grades.</li></ol><h2>Subject Combinations Offered by Top Secondary Schools</h2><p>Because offerings vary, the smartest move before ranking your preferences is to check what your school actually provides. The cleanest official source is each school's <strong>"Subjects Offered" listing on MOE SchoolFinder</strong>, which MOE updates per cohort. Below are direct links for popular secondary schools.</p><p>‍</p><div class="w-embed"><div class="table-wrap"> <table class="rteTable"> <thead><tr><th>Secondary school</th><th>Official subjects offered</th></tr></thead> <tbody> <tr><td>Anglican High School (SAP, co-ed)</td><td><a href="https://www.moe.gov.sg/schoolfinder/schooldetail/anglican-high-school" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">View subjects offered →</a></td></tr> <tr><td>Catholic High School (SAP, boys)</td><td><a href="https://www.moe.gov.sg/schoolfinder/schooldetail/catholic-high-school-secondary" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">View subjects offered →</a></td></tr> <tr><td>Cedar Girls' Secondary School (autonomous, girls)</td><td><a href="https://www.moe.gov.sg/schoolfinder/schooldetail/cedar-girls-secondary-school" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">View subjects offered →</a></td></tr> <tr><td>CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls' School (SAP, girls)</td><td><a href="https://www.moe.gov.sg/schoolfinder/schooldetail/chij-st-nicholas-girls-school-secondary" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">View subjects offered →</a></td></tr> <tr><td>Chung Cheng High School (Main) (SAP, co-ed)</td><td><a href="https://www.moe.gov.sg/schoolfinder/schooldetail/chung-cheng-high-school-main" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">View subjects offered →</a></td></tr> <tr><td>Crescent Girls' School (autonomous, girls)</td><td><a href="https://www.moe.gov.sg/schoolfinder/schooldetail/crescent-girls-school" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">View subjects offered →</a></td></tr> <tr><td>Fairfield Methodist School (Secondary) (autonomous, co-ed)</td><td><a href="https://www.moe.gov.sg/schoolfinder/schooldetail/fairfield-methodist-school-secondary" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">View subjects offered →</a></td></tr> <tr><td>Maris Stella High School (Secondary) (SAP, boys)</td><td><a href="https://www.moe.gov.sg/schoolfinder/schooldetail/maris-stella-high-school-secondary" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">View subjects offered →</a></td></tr> <tr><td>Methodist Girls' School (Secondary) (independent, girls)</td><td><a href="https://www.moe.gov.sg/schoolfinder/schooldetail/methodist-girls-school-secondary" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">View subjects offered →</a></td></tr> <tr><td>Nan Chiau High School (SAP, co-ed)</td><td><a href="https://www.moe.gov.sg/schoolfinder/schooldetail/nan-chiau-high-school" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">View subjects offered →</a></td></tr> <tr><td>Nan Hua High School (SAP, co-ed)</td><td><a href="https://www.moe.gov.sg/schoolfinder/schooldetail/nan-hua-high-school" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">View subjects offered →</a></td></tr> <tr><td>Paya Lebar Methodist Girls' School (Secondary) (autonomous, girls)</td><td><a href="https://www.moe.gov.sg/schoolfinder/schooldetail/paya-lebar-methodist-girls-school-secondary" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">View subjects offered →</a></td></tr> <tr><td>Singapore Chinese Girls' School (independent, girls)</td><td><a href="https://www.moe.gov.sg/schoolfinder/schooldetail/singapore-chinese-girls-school" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">View subjects offered →</a></td></tr> <tr><td>Tanjong Katong Girls' School (autonomous, girls)</td><td><a href="https://www.moe.gov.sg/schoolfinder/schooldetail/tanjong-katong-girls-school" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">View subjects offered →</a></td></tr> </tbody> </table> </div></div><h2>How Zenith Education Studio Can Help</h2><p>Many students only discover whether a subject suits them once lessons begin.
